Character
“Character is what we do when we think no one is looking.”
As we close out another powerful year at Power of One – Lakewood, we’re focusing on one of the most important qualities a martial artist can develop—Character.
Character is more than just good behavior in front of others. It’s the invisible strength we show when we make the right choice, even when no one’s watching. Whether it’s putting away gear after class, encouraging a teammate, or staying true to your word—these moments reveal who we really are.
Each week this month, we’ll shine a light on a specific aspect of character:
🥇 Integrity
Integrity is doing the right thing—always. It’s not about being perfect, but about being honest, consistent, and trustworthy.
In class, this could mean owning up to a mistake or giving your best even when drills get tough. Outside of class, it means telling the truth, staying loyal to your values, and being someone others can count on.
🥋 Courtesy
Courtesy is how we treat others—with kindness, patience, and respect.
At the dojo, we bow to our partners, help younger students, and say thank you often. Courtesy reminds us that strength should always be balanced with compassion.
🛡 Respect
Respect is earned—but it’s also given freely by those with strong character.
It’s how we treat our instructors, our teammates, our parents—and ourselves. Respect is shown through listening, following directions, and caring for our community.
🤝 Loyalty
Loyalty means standing by your team, your family, and your values—even when it’s not easy.
In martial arts, loyalty means showing up, staying committed, and supporting those who support you. It’s a quality that builds trust and deepens bonds.
🎯 Wrapping Up the Year with Purpose
December is a time of reflection and renewal. As we prepare for the new year, let’s challenge ourselves to lead with character—in class, at home, at school, and in our community.
Every belt earned, every form practiced, every class attended means more when it’s rooted in strong character.
Let’s finish the year strong—by being the kind of person who always does what’s right, even when no one is watching.
