Leadership: Becoming the Example Others Follow
March 2026 Character Development Theme
At Power of One – Lakewood, March is our month to focus on Leadership. Many people think leadership means being the boss or being the loudest voice in the room, but true leadership is much more than that.
Leadership is about character, responsibility, and setting the right example for others. In martial arts, every student has the opportunity to develop leadership skills, no matter their belt rank or age.
Great leaders start by learning to lead themselves, treating others with respect, and staying committed to doing the right thing—even when it’s difficult.
Throughout March, we will explore four important leadership traits that help students become strong role models both on and off the training floor.
Week 1: Integrity
Integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.
A strong leader is someone people can trust. When students show integrity, they are honest, they follow the rules, and they take responsibility for their actions. Integrity builds trust between teammates, instructors, and families.
In martial arts training, integrity might mean admitting when you make a mistake, practicing when no one tells you to, or always showing respect during class.
When we practice integrity daily, we become leaders others can rely on.
Week 2: Positive Habits
Leadership is built through the habits we develop every day.
Small actions repeated consistently create strong character. Showing up to class on time, listening carefully to instruction, practicing techniques at home, and giving your best effort are all examples of positive habits that build leadership.
Great leaders understand that success is not built overnight. It is built through consistent effort, discipline, and dedication.
By developing strong habits, students learn that progress comes from persistence.
Week 3: Commitment
Commitment means following through on what you start.
Leaders stay dedicated even when things become challenging. Martial arts training teaches students that improvement takes patience and effort. There will be moments when a technique feels difficult or progress feels slow, but commitment means continuing to work hard anyway.
When students remain committed to their goals, they develop resilience and confidence that carries into every part of life.
Week 4: Respect
Respect is one of the most important qualities a leader can demonstrate.
Leaders treat others with kindness, patience, and understanding. At Power of One – Lakewood, respect means listening to instructors, supporting classmates, and treating everyone with dignity.
A respectful leader helps create a positive environment where everyone feels encouraged to grow and succeed.
When respect is practiced consistently, it strengthens the entire community.
Leadership Beyond the Dojo
The leadership lessons students develop in martial arts extend far beyond the training floor. The qualities of integrity, positive habits, commitment, and respect help students succeed in school, friendships, and future careers.
Our goal at Power of One – Lakewood is not only to build strong martial artists, but also to develop confident young leaders who will make a positive impact in their communities.
Leadership begins with small actions taken every day.
And every student has the potential to lead.
