Perseverance means continuing to work hard and stay strong, even when things get difficult. At Power of One - Lakewood, we believe perseverance is one of the most powerful traits a martial artist can develop. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about not giving up.
This month, we’re helping students understand what it means to keep going, stay motivated, and always get back up when they fall. Perseverance builds mental strength, emotional resilience, and long-term success—both on and off the mat.
Each week, we’ll explore a sub-theme that supports our main focus:
To persevere, you need a reason to keep going. That’s where goals come in. We teach our students to set personal goals—whether it’s earning a new belt, mastering a kata, or improving behavior at home or school. Goals give us direction and purpose. When challenges arise, goals remind us why we started.
Confidence grows when we overcome obstacles, even small ones. We remind students that making mistakes is part of learning. By pushing past fear and frustration, they prove to themselves they are capable—and that belief becomes fuel for perseverance.
Distractions are everywhere. Focus is the ability to stay locked in on the task at hand. Whether practicing a technique or listening to a parent or teacher, focus helps students stay on track and push through tough moments. Perseverance requires mental discipline—and that starts with focus.
Perseverance is built on commitment—the promise we make to ourselves to follow through. We show our students that commitment isn’t about being perfect, but about showing up, trying again, and sticking with something even when it’s hard. When you commit to the process, success will follow.
Perseverance is what turns short-term effort into long-term success. At Power of One - Lakewood, we teach our students that hard work, focus, and dedication always pay off—on the mat, in the classroom, and throughout life.
Let’s keep showing up, giving our best, and never giving up.
