At Power of One - Lakewood, self-defense goes beyond kicks and punches. It’s about protecting yourself with your mind, body, and choices. This month, we’re helping students understand how to stay safe in everyday situations—not just in the dojo, but at school, online, and in their communities.
Real self-defense starts before danger ever shows up. It begins with knowledge, awareness, and habits that help us avoid risky situations altogether.
Our weekly lessons break it down into 4 important areas:
Self-defense starts with smart choices. That might mean choosing to walk away from a fight, avoiding unsafe places, or saying “no” to peer pressure. Every decision our students make—online or in person—can either move them toward safety or risk. We help them learn to pause, think, and choose wisely.
Fueling your body is part of self-defense, too. When students eat well and stay hydrated, they feel stronger, think more clearly, and have more energy to react to situations. A healthy body is a safer body—and good nutrition helps build confidence and performance on the mat and in life.
We teach our students to stand tall, use confident body language, and speak up for themselves and others. Bully-proofing is about recognizing the signs of bullying, refusing to be a target, and knowing when to seek help. We don’t want our students to fight—we want them to be strong enough not to have to.
The best self-defense tool we have is awareness. That means paying attention to your surroundings, trusting your instincts, and knowing when something feels off. Whether walking home, using social media, or navigating school hallways, awareness helps students avoid danger before it starts.
Self-defense isn’t just physical—it’s personal power, confidence, and smart decisions. At Power of One - Lakewood, we equip our students to be alert, make wise choices, and protect themselves through knowledge, confidence, and action.
Because the best fight is the one you never have to be in.
